In the past few months we have been hearing about a few 3D collaborations between TV manufacturers like Panasonics and pay TV platforms. Today BSkyB has expressed their plans to partner with other international 3D platforms in co-productions. Variety mentions a few potential partners for the U.K. pay TV platform including the subsidiaries in Italy and Germany, un-identified companies in France and Scandinavia as well as a few U.S. players like DirecTV or Starz. To me the most likely partner seems to be 3net, as both parties are already scouting for content together at MIPTV this year.
Obviously this is good news. Standalone productions can rarely be justified with the low 3D penetration so far. Joint productions and broadcasts will enhance the total 3D offering in each territory and therefore increase sales of 3D TVs. I will keep you posted.
Disclaimer: We are in the process of negotiating several distribution, co-production and pre-sale deals with many of the largest 3D producers.
